“ 易 Yi is commonly taught as sun and moon, or as an animal that changes its appearance; either way, the character’s job is change. In ordinary Chinese it can also mean “easy,” or point to the ancient Book of Changes (Yijing 易經), but in Yijinjing it is simply the verb: to transform one condition into another. An old preface to the text says this yi is the yin-yang work of transformation—turning slack sinews harmonious, weak ones strong, and tight ones long.

筋 Jin is built from bamboo over flesh and strength: bamboo for something fibrous and cord-like, flesh and strength for living tissue that can pull. In ordinary speech it means sinew or tendon; in older medical and martial language it means the whole tensile web—tendons, ligaments, and fascia—that ties bone to flesh and carries force, not the soft meat Chinese already named with a different character, Ji (肌). An old description of the art places these sinews outside the bones and marrow and inside the skin and flesh, linking the whole body, so to “change the jin” is to transform that force-bearing network, not to bulk gym muscle.

經 Jing is silk thread beside a sign for the standing warp on a loom: the lengthwise threads that stay put while the rest of the cloth is woven across them. From that picture come its main senses—a constant path, a channel, and, in a book title, a classic or canon, a received scripture rather than a loose pamphlet. In Yijinjing that last sense is the one that counts: the title means “the Classic of Transforming the Sinews”.

The story usually begins with an Indian Buddhist monk arriving at Shaolin. He finds that years of seated meditation have left the monks too weak to sustain their practice, so he develops a method to rebuild their bodies. That monk is Bodhidharma, known in China as Damo (達摩).

The tradition presents the practice first as a way to change the body, rather than as a fighting art. Its name helps explain the aim. Yi means to change or transform, and jingmeans a classic or authoritative text. Most English translations render jin as tendon or sinew, although the traditional meaning is broader than the modern anatomical definition of a tendon. It includes the tough tissues through which muscles transmit force and joints hold together under load.

So can we train the body’s structural tissues on purpose? Does modern research give us reason to take that idea 

The Story Told at Shaolin

In the account most people hear, Damo reached China during the sixth century and eventually travelled to the Shaolin Monastery. There he found monks committed to meditation but poorly prepared for its physical demands. According to the legend, he spent nine years in wall-facing meditation near the temple and transmitted two methods: Yi Jin Jing and Xi Sui Jing, the Marrow Washing Classic (洗髓經).

The order of events tells us what the story is trying to preserve. The monks’ first problem was not a lack of combat skill. Their bodies could no longer support the discipline they were trying to practise. The remedy was structural: restore the sinews, strengthen the frame, regulate the breath, and make prolonged stillness physically sustainable.

Early Chan Buddhist sources describe Bodhidharma as a demanding meditation teacher, but they say little about him teaching a formal system of physical exercise. The familiar image of Damo as the author of a complete tendon-training curriculum developed later, as Shaolin’s religious, health, and martial practices became part of one origin story.

The story links mental discipline to a body capable of supporting that characteristic.

What the Historical Record Supports

The surviving written tradition appears much later than Bodhidharma. Scholars including Meir Shahar and Lu Zhouxiang associate the influential Yi Jin Jing text with the late Ming dynasty, probably around 1624. It contains prestigious prefaces that link the teachings to earlier generals and, through them, to Damo. Historians do not consider those prefaces reliable evidence of sixth-century authorship.

The early text also ranged more widely than the familiar twelve-posture routine that practitioners use today. It described a framework for transforming the body through physical work, breath, internal cultivation, and the circulation of qi. The twelve postures developed as one practical expression of those principles. Later Qing-dynasty sources helped give the method a stable, recognizable form.

The record changes how we date Yi Jin Jing. Bodhidharma almost certainly did not write the surviving manual. Shaolin still preserved and developed a system that treated the body’s structural tissues as trainable. The book may belong to the late Ming, while its ideas draw on a much older Chinese culture of daoyin, breath training, self-cultivation, and therapeutic movement.

Muscle Changes Faster

The same problem appears in the clinic and the gym. Muscles and tendons work together, but they do not adapt at the same rate.

With consistent resistance exercise, measurable changes in muscular strength and function can appear within weeks. Tendons also adapt, but usually more slowly. They transfer force from muscle to bone, store and release elastic energy, and help stabilize joints. Their collagen structure remodels over months rather than weeks.

That lag can leave the tendon behind. A person may gain muscular strength faster than the tendon adapts to transmit the new level of force. Progressive loading and recovery time give the connective tissue a chance to catch up.

Yi Jin Jing directs attention toward this slower side of adaptation. It trains the frame on purpose instead of treating it as a passive attachment for muscle.

What the Tendon Research Shows

A 2015 systematic review and meta-analysis by Sebastian Bohm, Falk Mersmann, and Adamantios Arampatzis examined 27 studies containing 37 exercise interventions. Most involved the Achilles and patellar tendons of healthy adults.

Tendons responded to mechanical loading. Training changed how they handled force, altered their material properties, and produced smaller changes in physical size. In plain language, a tendon could become better able to manage force without becoming dramatically thicker.

Loading intensity influenced tendon adaptation more than contraction style. Interventions using relatively high muscular contraction intensity, generally above about 70 percent of maximum, produced the largest changes. Programs lasting twelve weeks or longer also tended to perform better than shorter ones. Isometric, eccentric, and combined concentric-eccentric exercise all showed improvement.

Long isometric holds are one way to train a tendon, but they are not the only way. The tissue needs enough mechanical strain, repeated consistently, over enough time.

These findings do not prove that every modern Yi Jin Jing routine remodels tendon. A relaxed sequence with little physical effort may not reproduce the loading used in a tendon study. The research does support the principle behind the practice: connective tissue responds to strain, the dose counts, and adaptation takes” time.
